Cutting
Nitronic 50
At Houston Metal Sawing, we recently tackled a tough job cutting a 12-inch round piece of Nitronic 50 with a 4-inch wall thickness. Guided by Austin Zimmerman, we used the Q1002 triple-chip carbide blade to achieve a tight 1/16-inch tolerance over 25.5 inches.
The job took 2.5 hours, with a steady downfeed rate of 1.5–2 square inches per minute and a blade speed of 75–80 feet per minute. Thanks to the right tools, proper technique, and quality lubrication, we delivered a precise, high-quality cut.
This project highlights how expertise and the right setup make all the difference with tough materials like Nitronic 50.
Nitronic 50, also known as XM-19, is an austenitic stainless steel alloy that stands out due to its combination of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. What makes this alloy particularly unique is its ability to maintain toughness and mechanical properties in extreme environments.
Nitronic 50 provides yield strengths up to 2-3 times higher than standard stainless steels.
